Abscess

When a bacterial infection in the bone or gums takes hold, a tooth abscess can form. An abscess is a pocket of pus that sometimes looks like a boil or pimple. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and teeth.

Symptoms of an abscessed tooth include

Sharp or shooting pain
Gnawing or throbbing pain
Pain that radiates to the jawbone, neck, or ear
Bitter mouth taste
Gum redness and swelling

Broken, Chipped or Cracked Tooth Repair

Tooth repair is essential to avoid bacteria getting inside the tooth or gums. Bacteria causes infection and swelling, and can lead to a need for invasive procedures, such as root canals. Even a knocked-out tooth can potentially be saved if seen within a reasonable amount of time.

Depending on the severity of the crack or fracture, we have different treatment plans to remedy the damage and leave your smile looking as good as before

Why an Emergency Dentist Is Needed

If the break is significantly deep, the tooth's nerve can be exposed, causing immediate pain and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
Without tooth repair, the damage can spread and lead to more complex treatments.
Cracks and chips in the tooth allow bacteria to enter, increasing the risks of abscesses or infections.
If a damaged tooth is bleeding, it could signal a more serious injury requiring examination.

Swelling

If you are experiencing swelling along with heat, redness, inflammation, pus, or drainage, contact our office immediately. Swelling may not seem like an emergency situation, especially if you aren't physically injured. However, swelling can indicate serious dental issues, such as periodontitis (gum disease) or abscesses.

When Pain Signals an Emergency

Toothaches

Pain can be a difficult indicator of whether or not you're experiencing a dental emergency. When in doubt, always call.

A toothache is a general term for pain in the teeth and can result from multiple causes. Toothaches are accompanied by extreme temperature sensitivity, throbbing, and jaw pain. Many times, these symptoms make sleeping, working, or other day-to-day tasks difficult.

It can sometimes be difficult to understand when tooth pain is an emergency, but when in doubt, always call. It's better to be safe than sorry.

If experiencing a toothache, an urgent assessment is required and antibiotics may be needed.

Soak your damaged tooth in milk or hold it inside the mouth until you arrive at our office. DO NOT rinse your tooth with water or any type of cleaner.

For Bleeding

For Swelling

Hold a cold compress to the affected area.
