Dental Cleanings

Keep your smile strong and healthy with help from Kardynal Dental, a family-owned and-operated dental clinic in Shelby Township, MI. Our top priority is keeping our patients happy and healthy, and the best way to safeguard your smile is with proactive dental cleanings.

Why You Need Bi-Annual Cleanings

Routine dental cleanings are an essential part of your oral health. While daily oral hygiene at home can help slow the accumulation of tartar, it typically does not prevent it altogether. Left to accumulate for too long, tartar can result in discoloration, cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and gum recession.

Benefits

Prevents oral health problems like gum disease, tooth decay, cavities, and persistent bad breath.
Ensures oral health conditions are detected early on, often resulting in less invasive, less expensive procedures.
Includes a routine screening to detect abnormalities that could indicate early signs of oral cancer.
Safeguards your health, as many systemic health problems are closely linked to oral health, such as hypertension and diabetes.
Removes surface-level stains, tartar, and other discoloration that a toothbrush and dental floss can’t remove.
Saves money on costly treatments in the long run.

Types of Cleanings We Offer

We offer a variety of different dental cleanings, which are recommended based on each patient's individual oral health needs and goals. These include:

Routine Prophylaxis Cleaning

Many patients receive routine prophylaxis cleanings, which involve regular scaling and polishing. During scaling, we use special dental tools to remove plaque and tartar from the front, back, and side surfaces of the teeth, paying special attention to the gum line. During polishing, we use a special paste and a spinning brush to remove any remaining tartar while lifting away surface-level discoloration. Patients with normal oral health should visit the dentist every six months for a routine dental cleaning.

Deep Cleaning/Scaling & Root Planing

A deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is recommended for patients with periodontal gum disease. A deep cleaning reaches farther below the gum line to remove tartar while using special tools to smooth the surfaces of the roots and discourage bacterial growth. An antiseptic solution is sometimes used to eliminate harmful bacteria. We perform this type of cleaning with a numbing at your request to ensure you’re comfortable.

Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning

Periodontal maintenance cleanings are deep cleanings of the teeth that happen on a more frequent schedule to prevent serious cases of periodontal disease from advancing. The frequency of perio-maintenance cleanings depends on the individual patient and their oral care needs, often three or four times per year.
