Dental Crowns and Bridges

Restore your smile (and oral health!) with help from Kardynal Dental. We’re a family-owned and -operated dental clinic in Shelby Township, MI, offering a wide array of restorative options, including dental crowns and bridges.

Crowns

Dental crowns are a permanent restorative solution in which a protective hard outer covering is placed over an existing tooth, acting like a cap or helmet. It’s not only designed to restore the aesthetic of the natural tooth but also to help protect oral health. We usually recommend dental crowns when a tooth is badly decayed, broken, discolored, or misshapen, after a root canal when the tooth needs extra protection, or to anchor a dental bridge.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are custom-made to ensure aesthetic uniformity and an intricate exact fit.
When preparing a tooth for a crown, some of the enamel on the existing tooth is removed to ensure a perfect fit.
Crowns protect weakened teeth, preventing further decay and degradation.
Dental crowns are designed to last for a long time, usually 5 years or more, if properly cared for.

Bridges

Dental bridges are a more complex restorative option for situations where there are multiple missing teeth in a row.

A bridge could be a good option for individuals experiencing tooth loss, but our recommendations will vary based on age, the number of teeth missing, the condition of the teeth next to the gap, and your overall oral health.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Bridges can help improve quality of life, especially for individuals experiencing issues chewing or biting due to tooth loss.
Similar to crowns, dental bridges are custom-made to mimic the appearance of the individual’s natural teeth.
Bridges help restore natural speech patterns.

Understanding When These Restorative Options Are Needed

We always recommend scheduling an appointment to discuss your concerns and goals. The right restorative solution will vary based on your personal preferences and goals, your determined oral health, including the condition of your teeth and gums, and the specific health issues you’re experiencing.

Generally speaking, dental crowns can be a good option for individuals:

  • With genetic conditions leading to unhealthy or irregularly shaped teeth.
  • Cracked, infected, decayed, or broken teeth.
  • Severe discoloration that can’t be treated through standard whitening procedures.
  • Enamel loss.
  • Post-root canal healing.

Dental bridges can help individuals with:

Multiple missing teeth in a row, who want something that doesn’t require removal at night.
Multiple missing teeth who don’t want an invasive option like dental implants, or don’t have the bone density to support implants.

FAQs

There is no standard timeframe. If the restoration is cared for with proper brushing and flossing, it will greatly increase the lifespan of your crown or bridge. If you properly care for your teeth and ensure you have regular dental check-ups, they can last anywhere from a few years to multiple decades.

A dental crown is a restorative option for a single damaged, weakened, or discolored tooth. A dental bridge consists of at least three teeth: one or more artificial teeth in the middle and a crown or implant on either side of the artificial teeth. They are meant to restore large gaps of missing teeth.

Generally, yes. If the procedure is determined to be medically necessary, your insurance will cover a portion of it, but you can expect an out-of-pocket portion, as well. If it’s considered cosmetic, your insurance likely will not cover the procedure. We know that insurance can be confusing, so please call our office at (586) 261-8819 to speak with our insurance specialists.

Yes! Every restorative option is custom-made. During your visit, we will assess the shade of your existing teeth and match your crown or bridge to your natural teeth.
