Teeth Whitening

Kardynal Dental is proud to offer a variety of cosmetic treatment options, including professional teeth whitening, to patients throughout Shelby Township, MI. Teeth whitening is a fast, easy, and safe way to freshen your smile.

Our Options

In-Office Treatment

Kardynal Dental offers convenient in-office teeth whitening treatments using Opalescence. These treatments use a 40% hydrogen peroxide formula to whiten teeth several shades within a single 45- to 60-minute period.

Many patients prefer in-office whitening when they need quick results, have deep stains, have a history of teeth sensitivity, or need dental work to achieve even results.

Take-Home Kit

We provide professional-grade Opalescence take-home kits for patients who prefer to self-administer treatments at home on their own schedule. These take-home kits include comfort fit trays prefilled with whitening gel.

Benefits of Professional Teeth Whitening

  • Fast Results: Whether you choose in-office treatments or take-home kits, professional teeth whitening delivers results more quickly than commercial-grade over-the-counter alternatives.
  • Effective: Professional treatments help brighten the teeth by several shades and provide longer-term results than commercial-grade kits.
  • Safe: In-office and professional-grade take-home treatments brighten teeth without the risk of damaging tooth enamel.

  • Sensitivity Mitigation: Professional teeth whitening includes sensitivity prevention and relief gel to protect your gums and tooth enamel to reduce treatment-related sensitivity.
  • Improve Appearance: Whether you want to brighten your teeth or remove stubborn stains, teeth whitening will freshen your look and revitalize your smile.

How Our In-Office Treatment Works

01

Scheduling & Consultation

The first step is to schedule your consultation, where we’ll discuss your desired results and help you determine the type of treatment that best meets your needs.

02

Exam

Our dentists examine your teeth for untreated decay or damage to the tooth enamel. Any tooth damage must be fixed prior to whitening. If procedures are required, our office will help you schedule your next appointment.

03

Cleaning & Preparation

Before beginning your treatment, we'll clean and polish your teeth, removing any plaque and tartar buildup. This helps provide a clean, even surface for the whitening agents, ensuring better, longer-lasting results.

04

Gel Application

Once your teeth are ready for treatment, we insert a retractor to help isolate the teeth and prevent interference from the lips and cheeks. We then apply a protective layer to the gums to prevent the whitening agent from causing any irritation. Then, we apply the Opalescence gel. Treatment duration and frequency vary based on your desired level of whitening. However, most patients achieve their desired results within an hour.

05

Final Assessment

Once the treatment is complete, our dentist performs a final assessment to ensure the desired level of whitening has been achieved. If necessary, we may schedule a follow-up exam or recommend additional treatments with take-home kits.

FAQs

Professional teeth whitening results typically last between one and three years. Results vary from patient to patient, depending on lifestyle and eating habits.

Kardynal Dental’s teeth whitening treatment uses a medical-grade concentration of hydrogen peroxide to dissolve and lift stains from tooth enamel.

Professional teeth whitening is generally very safe, but it can cause temporary side effects, such as tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. It's important for patients to thoroughly discuss any over-the-counter whitening products they have used and any existing dental work with us before treatment.

Prescription-grade take-home whitening kits contain a higher concentration of active whitening agents compared to standard over-the-counter whitening kits or kits bought online. As a result, they work more quickly and effectively. You can read this blog for more information.

While policies differ, teeth whitening treatments are typically not covered by insurance because they are considered purely cosmetic and elective.

To prolong the results of professional whitening treatments, we recommend:

  • Avoiding tobacco use
  • Limiting the consumption of highly pigmented foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, dark-colored sodas, berries, chocolate, and sports drinks, or rinsing your mouth with water after eating.

The recommended frequency of whitening treatments varies from patient to patient. However, many patients schedule annual touch-up treatments.

Whitening treatments are not recommended for children under 16, individuals with untreated oral health issues, individuals with exposed tooth roots or damaged tooth enamel, pregnant or nursing women, individuals who are allergic to peroxide, or individuals with extensive dental restorations.

For 24 to 48 hours after teeth whitening, the teeth are highly porous, prone to staining, and more likely to be sensitive. Stick to a diet of light-colored foods and beverages, minimize contact with the fronts of your teeth, manage sensitivity with sensitivity-relief toothpaste, and use gentle, non-abrasive products to maintain oral hygiene.
