Mouthguards

Protect your smile with a custom mouthguard. Kardynal Dental, located in Shelby Township, MI, offers night guards and sports guards to help you prevent oral injuries while sleeping or during athletic activities. Our family dentists can help you determine if you could benefit from a mouthguard, and which type offers the best protection for your lifestyle.

Available Options

While it's tempting to use store-bought mouthguards, they don't offer the best protection because they aren't fully customized. Our mouthguards, including bite/night guards and sports guards, offer the best protection and the highest level of comfort because they aren't stock; they're made specifically for you.

Bite Guards

Bite guards, also called dental night guards or occlusal splints, are made from smooth, rigid plastic and designed to fit over your upper and/or lower arch. Our custom night guards help:

  • Protect the teeth from the excessive wear and tear caused by bruxism (clenching the jaw and grinding the teeth).
  • Alleviate jaw tension, headaches, and pain caused by temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ).

Sports Guards

Also called athletic mouthguards, sports guards are designed to be worn during sports and other athletic activities where there is a risk of falls and/or impacts to the face, mouth, or jaw.

Our sports guards:

  • Protect the soft tissues from damage caused by biting down.
  • Prevent impact damage to the teeth and jawbones.
  • Absorb shock when the teeth forcefully bite together.
  • Safeguard orthodontic appliances, including braces, during athletic activities.

Do You Need a Mouthguard?

You should consider a mouthguard if you have or experience any of these conditions:

Bruxism or sleep bruxism
Obstructive sleep apnea
Snoring
Sensitive teeth
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)
Waking up with headaches, jaw pain, or jaw stiffness
Excessive wear and tear of tooth enamel, including chipped teeth or flat-topped molars
Frequent participation in activities that come with higher impact and injury risks

Our dentists can help you determine if a mouthguard or sports guard may be beneficial to your oral health and comfort.

Our Process

01

Scheduling

If you’re interested in purchasing a custom mouthguard, the first step is scheduling an appointment. During your appointment, our dentist will listen to your concerns and help you determine which type of mouthguard will best address your needs.

02

Taking Scans

After the initial consultation, we'll take an impression of your mouth to ensure the best fit. At Kardynal Dental, we use multiple modern digital scanners, which are a modernized tech improvement over traditional physical impressions created with sticky putty. Our digital impressions are quicker, more accurate, and more comfortable for patients.

03

Off to the Lab!

Once your digital impressions are made, we’ll submit the design to our partner lab, where your custom mouthguard will be manufactured using high-quality, durable materials.

04

Fitting

Once your mouthguard is ready, we’ll call you to schedule your fitting. During this appointment, we’ll make final adjustments to the mouthguard to ensure it fits comfortably. We will also provide instructions for using, cleaning, and caring for your mouthguard.

FAQs

Yes! All mouthguards are custom-designed and custom-fit to ensure optimal comfort and performance.

It depends on your provider and plan. Many insurance plans provide partial coverage for mouthguards, especially when they are deemed medically necessary. Our office team can help you navigate your insurance policy to help you anticipate any out-of-pocket costs.

Absolutely! A custom-designed mouthguard can be worn over braces. We often recommend guards for patients who frequently participate in athletic activities because the guard will help protect braces and other orthodontic appliances.

Yes. The primary drawback of store-bought mouthguards is that they are not custom-designed. Due to the less-than-optimal fit, they offer less effective protection and are less comfortable to wear.

Mouthguards can't protect your teeth when you don't wear them. However, the frequency of use depends on the purpose of your mouthguard. Most night guards should be worn every time you sleep. Sports guards should be worn anytime you participate in athletic activities.

Clean your mouthguard by rinsing it with cool water immediately after use. Use a mild soap, non-abrasive toothpaste, or denture cleanser and gently brush it with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Be sure to let it dry completely to prevent bacterial growth and store it in a ventilated case. We also recommend bringing your mouthguard to your routine dental appointments for professional maintenance.
